(March 5, 2022, Knoxville, Tennessee)
The WGI Knoxville Percussion and Winds Regional drew a wide range of units as the indoor marching activity celebrates a return to in-person contests.
The stats: 20 percussion ensembles, 4 winds units, 5 states represented, 7 competition classes.
Reigning WGI Scholastic Open class gold medalist Sparkman H.S. (Harvest, AL) had a spectacular run, scoring 85.3 with its musical nuances,
confident delivery and compelling storyline. Frequent WGI medalist Muscle Shoals H.S. (AL) scored 85.2 with a masterful performance in Scholastic Concert Open class, while
perennial contender Dorman H.S. (Roebuck, SC) scored 84.05 with a visually and emotionally engaging program to place first among 12 units in Scholastic A class.
Clover H.S. (SC), Dobyns-Bennett H.S. (TN) and Oak Ridge H.S. (TN), all scored 80+ points, with host school Hardin Valley Academy Winds (TN) just a fraction away at 79.95.
This is only the fourth weekend of in-person WGI percussion and winds events since the season came to an abrupt end due to COVID-19 in March 2020. Performers now have their eyes on Dayton, Ohio, where the
WGI Percussion and Winds World Championships are set to return April 21-24.
