Vikingland Band Festival : COVID 19 Update - March 23, 2021
Updates related to COVID-19 / 2021 Vikingland Band Festival
Although there is still uncertainty about whether Minnesota state health mandates will be in place this June, we are increasingly optimistic that we will be able to gather in person for a parade!
The festival committee has discussed three optional formats for the event and will refine the plan as we get closer to summer. (For example, if restrictions on crowd size are in place, we could hold a capacity-limited event on the high school campus.)
Regardless of the format, this year's event will celebrate a step toward normalcy and is designed to provide a performance opportunity for band students who missed an entire marching season last year.
Based on input from band directors and TriState Judging Association, some revised plans are already in place.
Festival style ratings rather than scores and placements
- A full panel of 6 judges will still evaluate performances and provide educational feedback. However, ratings will be announced as "Superior / Excellent / Good" rather than placements and scores. Bands currently holding class or grand champion flags from 2019 will have the chance to defend those titles in 2022.
No formal awards ceremony
- To allow bands to remain in their own "bubble" and avoid the large crowd at the stadium, ratings will be announced via social media and media outlets rather than the traditional awards event.
The 2021 lineup once again features an excellent roster of bands. The committee will continue to monitor Centers for Disease Control and public health guidance as we finalize plans in the coming months.
