WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
4TH OF
JULY
PARADE
Thursday, July 4, 2002, 5:00 PM
The Wakefield Independence Day Parade is the largest 4th of July parade in Massachusetts and one of the finest in New England. More than 100,000 spectators gather along the parade route which travels through this historic community just 10 miles north of Boston.Participants include many of the top DCI drum and bugle corps along with high school marching bands, giant balloons and antique vehicles. Other unique aspects of the parade include airplane fly-overs and "carnival" dancers in lavish costumes.
The parade starts on North Avenue (near I-95N at Exit #39) and travels to Main Street in the center of Wakefield. A fireworks display is featured near the parade route over Lake Quannapowitt several hours after the parade has ended.
The Wakefield Independence Day Parade makes a terrific centerpiece for bands wishing to tour the East Coast during early July. On the days before and after the Wakefield parade, groups can march in parades in several nearby communities or attend a drum and bugle corps show. A tour can also incorporate the many historic sites of the Boston area. Few regions offer so much history and educational opportunities in one area.
