Vikingland Band Festival : 2017 Grand Marshal
Redfield named Grand Marshal of 2017 Vikingland Band Festival
ALEXANDRIA, MN (May 31, 2017) The Vikingland Band Festival committee is proud to announce that Dr. Keith Redfield has been named grand marshal of the 33rd Annual Vikingland Band Festival to be held Sunday, June 25. Redfield was selected for the honor because of his long career supporting students and school music programs while serving as a principal in Alexandria Public School District 206.
Redfield's 20-year career in Alexandria, from 1969 to 1989, included time as principal at both Central Junior High School and Jefferson Senior High School. He later served as superintendent in several other districts, notably at Ortonville, Morris and Minnewaska, but always maintained a residence in Alexandria. It was during Dr. Redfield's time as principal of Jefferson High School that the Alexandria Marching Band rose to national prominence with invitations to appear in the Cotton Bowl Parade and Tournament of Roses Parade.
Committee chair Greg DeGier said, "Dr. Redfield is a perfect grand marshal for the Festival, because he has a strong record of supporting student musicians and music teachers during his time as a school administrator. He knows that music is an important part of a well rounded education and a factor in student engagement at school."
As grand marshal, Dr. Redfield will lead the Vikingland Band Festival parade beginning at 1:30 PM on Sunday, June 25. This year's lineup features 22 marching ensembles including special guests Minnesota Brass Drum & Bugle Corps and River City Rhythm Drum & Bugle Corps. The marching music weekend will also feature the Minnesota Drum Corps Premiere field show exhibition on Saturday, June 24, at 6:30 PM. The colorful field event will showcase musical performances from three high school bands plus the season debut of all four of Minnesota's competitive drum & bugle corps.
