The Festival of Bands USA features a very full day of marching
activities for a large lineup of bands from South Dakota, Minnesota,
Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. This 21st year of competition is expected to draw up
to 10,000 visitors and competing band members. Last year's lineup of 41 bands on
parade and 29 bands in field prelims was the largest number of bands ever
to appear at the Festival.
The eight-block morning parade follows Main Avenue through downtown
Sioux Falls, with judging near the third block of the route. Field
prelims are now held at the University of Sioux Falls stadium, which
offers a much improved view compared to previous years when prelims were
held at high school sites.
During the parade and at prelims, bands compete in four classes for
rating and ranking, with judges offering evaluation and commentary to
the competitors. Trophies are awarded to the top three bands in each
class. At finals, the 10 advancing bands compete in one class for
trophies to the top five places.
Festival of Bands USA offers to assist with any need visiting bands may
have, including travel directions, food and lodging arrangements, band
escorts to assist throughout the day, and even the best places to
videotape. Additional information and a registration form can be downloaded below.
