The 2008 Albert Lea Festival of Bands has been canceled.
"It has been our pleasure to have served the bands, their young people, and the people of Minnesota and surrounding area for the past eight years," says Festival Chairman Dick Hench. "I feel that this is a major loss to the 'Summer Marching Band Program' in Minnesota. I also feel that the music programs in our school are suffering badly from the budget restrains being placed on our schools. Music in my humble opinion provides one of the greatest positives in the development of our young people in school. It is sad that it is one of the first programs to be cut, the first to be excluded when budget is a factor."

Albert Lea's Festival of Bands has become an established part of the summer "bands-only" parade season in Minnesota. The parade is always held on Father's Day and features no floats, cars or horses ... just many of the finest bands from across Minnesota and Wisconsin. The 9th Annual event will begin at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 15.

Trophies and prize money are awarded to the top three bands in four classes. Additional awards are provided for color guard, percussion, brass, woodwinds, People's Favorite, and Grand Champion. The festival also provides travel money to participating bands.

The 1-mile parade route travels south on Broadway Avenue, turns west on Pearl Street, and then turns north on Washington Avenue to Water Street where it turns to disband at Central Park. Judging takes place near the intersection of Main Street and Broadway.
